Diva Challenge 363 and Pattern Tutorial “Circe”

Hi everyone and welcome to the Tireless Tangler! It is time for our weekly Diva Challenge and I have a new pattern tutorial on “Circe” by Staub Korn.

This week, the Diva challenges us to “aura”. Auras are simple ways to enhance tangles by simple adding new lines inside or outside that match, which adds interest. This week I chose a ZenGem and stuck with simple lines and orbs.

I have fallen in love with the pattern Circe by Staub Korn! It’s good that I liked it so much because it took me some time to figure it out! I wanted to reproduce it so my motivation was high! Here are 2 tiles from the videos.

Diva Challenge 360 “Duotangle”

Today’s Diva Challenge, issued by CZT, Laura Harms, was to use a “Duotangle” consisting of the tangles “Tripoli”, and “Shattuck”. I use both of these a lot, so I applied myself using one of my “tan treasure tiles” made with Eni Oken’s parchment paper technique on a Zentangle ® Renaissance tile. It was perfect until I added the white gelly roll and a third Tangle appeared. I think it’s a version of hypnotic. So, I missed the Duotangle aspect completely but I still like the tile! 😉

Finally, for your enjoyment, a new Kitchen Table Tangles video! This is a Cadent Tangleation and honestly, I’m still working on it! Rick Roberts drawing is always a pleasure to watch!

It’s A String Thing #238

Adele Bruno (Tickledtotangle.blogspot.com), has issued her “it’s a string thing” challenge for this week and featured her new Tangle, “Mack”. The new grid-based pattern is fun to play with and has lots of embellishment possibilities. Needless to say, I had to do 2 tiles! Congratulations, Adele, on a wonderful new Tangle!

New Brand, YouTube and an Inktense Gem Tutorial

It’s a great new year! I’ve had a lot happening behind the scenes and time off with my family. First and most importantly for me was the gracious gift from the incredible digital artist Christel Foncke, allowing me to use one of her beautiful pieces of art to brand this website and all it’s social media sites. This incredible piece of art is just a hint of what Christel can do with her Apple Pencil! I will have her Artist Focus soon! Thank you, Christel! I have been in “school” at the YouTube Creator’s Academy because I’m slowly changing the format for this blog to include video. The more artists I focus on, the more I want to spotlight their work using video. Since my next artist in focus will be the incredibly talented Tomàs Padrós, I wanted to be sure I spent time learning to edit video, add audio and learn about copyright laws. I’ve been absorbing a lot of information and I needed to practice. This move was much more complex and involved much more time studying and practicing than I anticipated! I practiced by FINALLY doing the Inktense Pencil gem tutorial for which I’ve been trying to find the time about 6 months! So, I present my Derwent Inktense Gem Tutorial Part 1, which involves laying down and activating the Inktense bottom layer as well as 6 of my favorite color combinations. It features a traveling tangle tile with Amanda Rose Rambo, the “Gem Queen”, and myself. She has a great YouTube channel at Vitruvianart. Her content on creating gems is outstanding! When I finished the first video, I uploaded it to “Gem Ho’s” the FaceBook group for Amanda’s VitruvianArt. They gave me some great feedback which I then used to make a part 1.5 which includes a complete gem using the new highlight technique I developed based on the feedback of the group. I would very much appreciate any feedback, positive or not. If you like the video please remember to like or comment and subscribe to my channel! It is pretty empty now but I have plans for it! I will be remaking the artist focus videos (with their permission) and uploading them both here and YouTube. I’ll be adding my pattern videos and anything else that seems interesting. Diva Challenge #334

The Diva was back in action this week using one my favorite tangles, N’Zeppel. Diva, Laura Harms at Iamthedivaczt.blogspot.com, was back live on Twitch Monday morning and I was lucky enough to finally catch her broadcast. Laura is great and relaxed on the feed, adding coffee and her playlist as she tangles. I enjoyed it and she inspired me to try something I never wanted to do, namely, color black the small areas between the stones (in my case). I like the way the webbed area looks, so I’ve never filled it before. For the colored stones, done with Prismacolor Premier pencils, i liked the black to emphasize the depth between. Check out the link to the Diva’s site and find links to the pattern step-out as well as a great video by Molly Hollibaugh, CZT and daughter of Maria Thomas. Molly’s a great artist and I love the video. (I highly recommend everyone try out one of the many videos out there done by Rick Roberts, Maria Thomas, founders of the Zentangle ® Method, or one with Molly. They have a way of teaching that is second to none, If you want to truly experience a Zentangle experience, check out their videos. A few can be found on YouTube. Look for Kitchen Table Tangles. These are great videos.)

Diva Challenge #315

 Hello and welcome back to The Tireless Tangler! It’s time for the weekly Diva Challenge. This weeks challenge was to get to know the Tangle “Molygon” better. To make friends with it. Sigh! I love Molygon. It was my very first tangleation about a year ago. I love the tangle but I’m always displeased with my results. Shaking hands are not friendly with Molygon! Maria Thomas said to “keep the lines consistent”. Hmmm…after 6 starts (and fails) and yes I know this is not true to the Zentangle® Method, (but they didnt have to post online for all to see) so after some thinking, finally I reminded myself I was missing the point of the challenge. I took out the sketchpad and played with Molygon until I came up with my own version that would be easier for me to draw. It’s closer to a “flux” in a molygon fashion but I’m sticking with it!

New Weekly Diva Challenge Tile #309

Welcome back to the weekly diva challenge brought to you by the diva herself, Laura Harms! You can find this week’s challenge here in Laura’s blog. This week we are once again following Zentangle HQ at Zentangle.com or check back here for the weekly challenge. Recently,  in the Zentangle Mosaic app,  we were challenged to use the newly released “noom” pattern,  the step outs to which can be found here.

Noom and I have been trying to make friends since it’s release… Unfortunately, I was not inspired and I struggled to make it look nice. Well, we made up today finally and here’s my tile for the Diva’s weekly challenge this week!

Diva Challenges #290 and 291

This week’s Diva Challenge was to create a Halloween themed tile. On my tile I used #dandi, and #Web and the mummy wraps are a sort of #hollibaughsy #aquafluersy looking thing. I used black card stock, Sakura Moonlight gel pens, as well as a white gelly roll, also from Sakura. Also I used a white Prismacolor Premier pencil.

Last week’s challenge was to mix the 2 tangles #n’zepple and #Flux. I thought my tiles were to frivolous to post but when I posted them to the Zentangle Mosaic app, founder Maria Thomas was one who quickly appreciated them (I won’t lie, I’m still a bit giddy!)

This was a complete mistake! I’d meant to add a water drop but was not paying enough attention and got a see thru #Flux. This funny mistake ended up pretty cool looking and is one reason the Zentangle Method doesn’t acknowledge mistakes. It is still part of the creative process! 

This was just for fun! Both versions of Flux with a bit of N’zepple.

Diva Challenge #288 “Gourdgeous”

This week’s challenge was to do the tangle “gourdgeous”. It’s very fall and quite a lovely result. For some reason I’m awkward when drawing this so I wasn’t as pleased with my results as I would like. So, in keeping with my self- challenge to post even if I’m not satisfied, here are my diva challenge tiles for this week.

Fancy Letters a la Illumination

Hello Everyone 🙂 happy Thursday! I needed a project today that would consume me for a few hours as letting go of my anger from yesterday has proven difficult. So today I chose a project I’ve been wanting to try out. I’ve seen a couple of tutorials on illuminated letters and it didn’t look too hard (😁 not so easy). I played with different styles and finally decided to just do my own version. My biggest concern is that no one will recognize which letters they are!

My supplies today:

• Black card stock (A4) 8.5 x Prismacolor Premier Soft-core colored pencils :pale sage, Apple green, peacock green, cloud blue, China blue, ultramarine, blue indigo and white.
• Sakura stardust dark blue
• Pen-touch silver pen
• Gamsol blending solution
• Tiny paper stump
• Ruler
• Hb graphite pencil

The design is 5 inches tall by 8.5″ wide. After penciling in the letters, I used the cloud blue pencil to outline the design and then fill all ribbon parts with cloud blue and the straight legs with pale sage. When working on black, layering over white or a light color helps bring out the color of each subsequent layer.

Next I layered apple green over the pale save and China blue over the cloud blue. Then added my first layer of silver with my Pen-touch.

At this time I take the peacock green and give the green parts a nice outline for some depth. Then I used my ultramarine to deepen the blue of the ribbon. Leaving it off any part that will be highlighted.  I used my white pencil to give a good light layer over the parts of blue that are highlighted.

The last steps involved using the indigo blue to shade the blue ribbon, then outlining the part of the blue that is NOT outlined in silver with the Sakura Stardust (glitter pen that uses ground glass in the ink instead of glitter. I did the partial silver outline to bring out the bar of the h. Now I’m hoping you know that’s an H!

The last thing I did is to use the silver Pen-touch to cover the outline again as I frequently make a mess in the lines.  (this is an accommodation for my shaky hands and not required.) And I used my hb pencil to shade the silver where 2 silver parts meet to show some contrast.

One fold later and spray with workable fixatif and call it done. 

My question to you, dear readers, is if the letters are recognizable or not? (okay,  it’s an  L and H 😁)
